Are Your Hot Flashes Confusing Your AC And Your Furnace Or Hurting Them?

Posted on: 2 December 2014

Your thermostat doesn't know if it's heating or cooling. One moment the air conditioner's blasting in the dead of winter. The next moment it's turned up to 80 degrees. Perimenopausal women, stop the madness! Not only might you be confusing your AC and your furnace, you might actually be hurting them!

Suddenly Switching Gears

Switching between your furnace and air conditioner too quickly can cause your furnace to quit on you. Think of driving down the road and suddenly thrusting your gears into reverse. Ouch! That's a good way to knock out your transmission. At the very least, you may be stripping your gears. So when your furnace takes you down the hot road, then suddenly veers off into cooling without coasting on OFF in between, you are being cantankerous with the controls. This does not make for happy units. It's a big turn-off.

Fixing Your Relationship

It could be a deal-breaker. When your furnace won't run because you've switched too quickly between cooling your hot flashes and warming your winter toes, the fix might be as simple as throwing your breaker, lighting the pilot light, or replacing the fuse. If that doesn't work, you may need to reset your system.

All that cycling back and forth between hot and cold can overload your motor. Simply press the reset button. You should be able to get it working in around five minutes or so. If not, wait around a half hour and try again. If it still doesn't work, you don't want your furnace's blower to lose its cool. It may not be a system reset. It might be worse. There may be no more electricity between your units.

Read your owner's manual. Troubleshoot to the best of your ability. If there's nothing you can do to remedy your broken relationship, maybe it's time to call your counselor--that is, your HVAC repairman. He will fix things between you so you can snuggle up with your heat again (or cool off with that fine AC unit.)

Just Promise You Won't Do It Ever Again

Your multitasking heating and air conditioning units will thank you not to become overzealous with your thermostat. Don't let them be turned off by you. Treat them as individuals. A little warmth, a little time off, will eventually lead to ultimate coolness. So respect the stat. You don't want your electrical system to get short with you. No one likes a systems dump.
